A Week of Gentle Sailing: Preveza to the South Ionian Islands

Why the Ionian Sea? The south‑western coast of Greece is a sailor’s dream. The Ionian islands offer reliable breezes, lush green scenery and short distances between safe anchorages, making them ideal for relaxed bay‑to‑bay cruising. Unlike the Cyclades, these islands are sheltered from the strong Meltemi winds and feature red‑tiled Venetian architecture, clear waters and verdant hillsides. The region is renowned for its gentle winds (Maestral in summer), predictable weather and welcoming tavernas. Preveza, on the Epirus coast, is a perfect jumping‑off point. YOLO Charters’ base sits on Leoforos Eirinis 81; it’s a few minutes’ walk from the main port and is surrounded by cafés and a lively waterfront. Here’s a suggested seven‑day itinerary starting from Preveza on a Saturday afternoon.. Day 1 (Saturday): Preveza Check‑In and Stroll Arrive in Preveza in the afternoon and begin your Ionian sailing adventure in a calm, welcoming setting. After landing at Aktion (PVK) Airport, a short transfer brings you to YOLO Charters’ base, conveniently located just a few minutes’ walk from the yachts at the main port. Check-in is smooth and unhurried, with a clear boat briefing and helpful local tips that set the tone for the week ahead. Once onboard, take time to settle in and prepare the yacht. Preveza is an excellent place to provision, with supermarkets, bakeries, wine shops and local markets all within walking distance. Stock up on fresh produce, bread, cheeses, seafood and drinks, so you can start the trip fully prepared and relaxed. In the late afternoon, enjoy a leisurely walk along Preveza’s seafront promenade. The marina buzzes gently with activity as fishing boats return, locals gather for coffee and the smell of grilled seafood drifts from nearby tavernas. Stop for a drink at a waterfront café and ease into the Ionian rhythm — slower, warmer and centred around the sea. For dinner, choose a taverna near the port and enjoy fresh fish or traditional Greek dishes just steps from the water. Afterward, return to the yacht for a peaceful night onboard. With provisions stocked and the crew rested, you’ll be ready to set sail early the next morning and begin your journey south through the Ionian. Day 2 (Sunday): Preveza → Lefkas Canal → Fraxia Bay → Python Cove → Sivota (≈20 nm) Cast off at first light and motor through the Lefkas canal, a narrow channel linking the Gulf of Ambracian to the Ionian Sea. Entering the canal requires caution – before entering, lower your sails and keep clear of rocky shoals; lateral buoys mark the route. Once in open water, head south along Lefkada’s eastern coast. After about three hours you’ll reach Fraxia Bay, a quiet inlet fringed by pine forest where the anchor holds well. Take a swim and admire views toward the private islands of Skorpios and Skorpidi (landing is prohibited because of private ownership. Continue to Python Cove, shaded by cliffs, where you can take long shorelines to the rocks. For the night, choose between the lively village of Sivota – a landlocked bay with quayside tavernas – or sail a few more miles to Vassiliki, Read more…

Sailing for Adventures

For those who crave discovery, challenge, and freedom, sailing offers one of the purest forms of adventure. Unlike packaged travel or predictable itineraries, life under sail puts you directly in touch with the elements—shifting winds, rolling seas, and the ever-changing horizon. It’s a journey not just across water, but into yourself. Adventurous sailing doesn’t require crossing oceans or chasing storms. It can be as simple as island-hopping in the Ionian, anchoring in remote coves, or setting your own course with no fixed plan. The thrill lies in self-reliance, in reading the weather, trimming the sails, and choosing your next destination on a whim. Every day brings new landscapes, new challenges, and unexpected encounters. It’s not always easy. There are moments of uncertainty, of handling sails in rising winds or navigating in the dark. But these moments forge resilience and confidence—and often become the stories you’ll tell for years. The reward is waking up to a sunrise at anchor, swimming alone in a turquoise bay, or sailing silently under a starlit sky with only the sound of the sea. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or taking your first steps aboard, sailing for adventure is about embracing the unknown, learning constantly, and letting nature set the pace. It’s travel at its most honest—and freedom at its fullest. Read more…

Tips for renting a boat

Renting a boat is a fantastic way to explore the coast, discover hidden beaches, and enjoy the freedom of the open sea. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, there are several important things to consider before setting off. First, choose the right type of boat based on your needs. Catamarans are popular for their space and stability, making them ideal for families or groups seeking comfort. However, many experienced sailors appreciate the sailing performance and traditional feel of monohulls, which often provide a more authentic connection with the sea. If you're not sure which to choose, consider your sailing background, the size of your group, and what kind of experience you want—whether it's relaxed cruising or more hands-on sailing. Next, decide whether you'll rent the boat bareboat or with a skipper. Bareboat charters give you full control of the vessel but require a valid sailing license and VHF certificate. If you don’t have the proper certification or simply prefer to relax, hiring a skipper is a great option. A local skipper not only handles the sailing but also knows the best places to anchor, dine, and explore. Before booking, check what is included in the price. Some charters may appear cheaper but exclude essentials like fuel, final cleaning, bed linen, towels, or Wi-Fi. Ask for a full list of included and optional extras, and clarify the terms of the security deposit and insurance. Look for an all-inclusive package if you want to avoid unexpected costs. Planning a realistic itinerary is key. Avoid rushing from one place to another—sailing is as much about the journey as the destination. Factor in time for swimming, relaxing, and adjusting for weather conditions. If you're unfamiliar with the area, your skipper or charter company can suggest routes based on local knowledge and forecasts. Before departure, inspect the boat carefully. Check the engine, sails, electronics, water tanks, anchor, and safety equipment. Take photos or videos during the check-in process to document the condition of the vessel and avoid potential disputes when returning it. Be sure to understand local boating regulations. Some destinations have restrictions on where you can anchor or sail, and certain areas may require permits or have environmental protections. Respect the sea by using eco-friendly products, conserving water and electricity, and anchoring responsibly. Finally, pack wisely. Bring soft bags instead of hard suitcases, non-slip shoes, lightweight clothing, sun protection, and any personal medications. It’s also helpful to install navigation and weather apps such as Navionics or Windy for real-time updates during your trip. Renting a boat can be one of the most memorable ways to experience a region—combining comfort, exploration, and a true sense of freedom. With the right preparation, you’ll be ready to enjoy a smooth and rewarding sailing adventure. Read more…
