North or South Ionian? Choose the Right Sailing Area for Your Week

Corfu’s old town, a swim off Paxos, an evening on Meganisi, perhaps a little of Ithaca too. It is a lovely wish list. The question is whether it describes one holiday—or two.

When choosing an Ionian sailing area, start with the week you want to have. Do you enjoy a passage as an event in itself, or would you rather spend more of each day swimming and exploring ashore? Your answer helps narrow the map before you fall in love with a yacht in the wrong departure base.

What do sailors mean by the northern and southern Ionian?

For holiday planning, a northern Ionian trip usually centres on Corfu, Paxos and Antipaxos, sometimes with mainland stops. A southern Ionian charter often explores the islands around Lefkada, Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Ithaca and Kefalonia. These are useful cruising-area descriptions, not strict administrative boundaries.

The Greek National Tourism Organisation’s Ionian overview gives a good introduction to the islands’ different characters. Keep that broad geography separate from your passage plan: a destination guide cannot tell you which crossing or overnight stop will suit the conditions on your week.

Choose the north if Corfu and Paxos are the places you keep saving

Corfu offers something quite different from a small harbour evening. Its old town deserves time on foot, whether before boarding or after the charter. If wandering streets and lingering over lunch are part of the appeal, allow for them in your travel dates rather than treating the town as a quick stop on the way to the yacht.

Paxos and Antipaxos may then provide the island part of the holiday you have been imagining. Reaching a favourite beach is always subject to conditions; it should not become the week’s non-negotiable appointment.

There is no need to add the southern islands simply because they are in the same sea. A holiday with time for Corfu and a selective island plan can feel much more complete than a week spent joining distant pins.

Choose the south for a week built around a smaller group of islands

From a suitable Preveza or Lefkada-area base, you can discuss a holiday around Meganisi and neighbouring islands, with Ithaca or northern Kefalonia considered if they fit your crew and the conditions. You do not have to include all of them.

This area lends itself to choosing the kind of stop you want: a village visit on Meganisi, a quieter shore afternoon on Kalamos or Kastos, or time in one of Ithaca and Kefalonia’s waterfront towns. Treat these as alternatives to discuss, not a ready-made daily schedule.

Close-looking islands still involve proper passages and changing weather. The advantage of a selective plan is room to adapt, not a promise of easy sailing every day.

Let the departure base settle the argument

A yacht advertised in a broad region is not necessarily waiting where your flights arrive. Confirm the exact embarkation and return locations before booking travel. Moving the start of a charter to another port may not be available, and a one-way trip is a separate arrangement to confirm—not an assumption.

If you are starting in Preveza, both your outward plan and the journey back need attention. It is possible to discuss different directions, but the same seven days cannot comfortably serve every wish list. Use three questions to choose

1. Which two places would we be most disappointed to miss? If both are in the same area, you already have a sensible starting point.
2. How much of the holiday do we want to spend underway? Include the least enthusiastic sailor in this conversation.
3. What must the final days allow for? Work back from the agreed return-to-base time, with weather margin, rather than leaving the return as an afterthought.

A family wanting short, flexible days may make a different choice from friends who actively look forward to longer passages. Neither holiday is better. They simply need different plans.

Send a shortlist, not a fixed route

When asking about an Ionian yacht charter, send your dates, preferred departure area, crew experience and two or three places that interest you. Say why you like them: swimming, town evenings, scenery or sailing itself.

That gives us something useful to discuss alongside the available sailboats and catamarans. The aim is to choose a part of the Ionian you can enjoy properly—and leave the other half as an excellent reason to return.
