Sailing Lefkada: Nydri, Sivota and the Islands Beyond

A Lefkada sailing holiday is easy to picture: green hills behind the waterfront, islands appearing across the water, and a week that leaves room for both swimming and village evenings. The harder part is choosing what to leave out. Start with a few experiences your crew genuinely wants, then choose the boat and departure base that make them practical.

This guide looks at Lefkada as a holiday area, with Nydri, Sivota and nearby island possibilities as starting points for discussion. It is not a promise that every stop will fit a particular week, or that a photographed bay will suit the conditions when you arrive.

Lefkada town, Nydri or Preveza: check where you board

Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a floating bridge, as described by Greece’s official tourism guide. That connection is useful when thinking about arrival logistics, but it does not make all nearby charter bases interchangeable. Lefkada town, Nydri and Preveza are different meeting points, and the address in your confirmed booking is the one to plan around.

Nydri: make room for the waterfront

Nydri, also written Nidri, gives you a different holiday scene from an isolated swim stop: waterfront activity, time ashore and views towards the islands off Lefkada’s eastern side. Consider what you would actually like to do there. An evening walk and a meal may need a different plan from a brief provisioning stop or meeting friends joining the holiday.

If a crew change or meeting ashore is involved, agree the practical arrangements with the charter team first. Do not choose a meeting time based only on the distance shown on a map. Weather, harbour arrangements and the day’s sailing plan can all change when you arrive. Sivota on Lefkada: be clear which place you mean

Sivota on the south-east of Lefkada is not the mainland destination often written Sivota or Syvota near the North Ionian. Write Sivota, Lefkada in your planning notes and transfer conversations. The Municipality of Lefkada describes this harbour village on its own destination page.

For a holiday wish list, think about the experience rather than assuming a berth: perhaps a waterfront dinner, a morning ashore or simply a different view from the cockpit. Ask the skipper to decide how a visit fits the conditions and the return plan. An attractive harbour photograph is inspiration, not evidence that space or shelter will be available for your boat.

Add nearby islands selectively

Meganisi is an obvious place to research alongside Lefkada, but even a nearby island deserves time rather than being treated as another box to tick. If you are drawn towards smaller-island days, explore Kalamos and Kastos. For a more ambitious wish list, Ithaca and Kefalonia may also interest you. These are alternatives to discuss, not a combined one-week itinerary. Avoid turning a relaxed Lefkada-focused charter into a race through every South Ionian name you have read.

What about Lefkada’s famous west-coast beaches?

The island’s dramatic beach photographs can easily dominate a holiday mood board. Treat them as places to research, not compulsory yacht stops. A beach that looks wonderful from above may not suit your boat, the forecast or your crew’s preferred day. The skipper must assess any approach and stop using current information; a travel article cannot do that for them.

You can also separate the sailing holiday from a land-based visit before or after it. That removes the pressure to reach a particular beach by sea simply because it appeared in the original plan. A good week’s success is the crew enjoying its time, not reproducing every photograph on the wish list.

Keep the first and last sailing days flexible

Boarding includes more than putting bags in cabins. Leave room for provisioning, the boat briefing and your crew getting comfortable aboard. Our yacht handover checklist is useful preparation, especially if some people are joining a sailing holiday for the first time.

Before the final day, work backwards from the return instructions in your booking rather than the checkout date alone. Ask the skipper how the last stop should fit those arrangements.
