Some sailing holidays begin with a long journey after the flight. Aktion Airport (PVK) is the airport to look for when planning a charter from Preveza. The airport’s own published access guide places it 6.7 km from the town — roughly seven kilometres. That is a useful distinction for a crew arriving with sailing bags: you can reach Preveza by road, without adding a ferry crossing to the airport transfer.
The distance is to Preveza, not a promise about the precise berth or minutes from aircraft to yacht. Baggage collection, traffic and the handover appointment still matter. Check the current airport transport information, then give your driver the meeting point supplied for your booking.
For families and groups arriving on different flights, the nearby town gives you somewhere pleasant to regroup. A coffee, lunch and an unhurried walk are a much better start than planning to cast off immediately after landing. A gateway with growing visitor traffic
Preveza and the surrounding Ionian region have become an increasingly busy gateway for travellers. There is a measurable sign of that growth: Aktion Airport recorded 875,962 passenger movements in 2025, compared with 824,894 in 2024, an increase of 6.2%, according to its official traffic report.
For a longer view, the airport recorded 625,790 in 2019. The 2025 total was approximately 40% higher. These are airport passenger movements, not unique holidaymakers or yacht-charter bookings, and the reports label the figures provisional. They nevertheless show how much the region’s air gateway has grown.
For your holiday, the useful question is not simply whether Preveza is becoming more popular. It is whether the flights, dates and boat fit together for your crew. Check services for your actual travel dates; a route operating in one part of the season may not suit another.

Preveza is more than the place where you collect the keys. Its waterfront and the streets behind it give the first evening a rhythm of their own: boats alongside, a wander through the old centre, and time to sit down together before a week at sea. The municipality’s walking guide is a useful introduction to the town’s squares, historic buildings and seafront.
You do not need a packed sightseeing plan. Leave a little space for dinner ashore, a morning coffee or an extra night before embarkation. That can be especially welcome if some of your crew are new to sailing: the holiday starts somewhere they can enjoy on foot, before they learn where everything lives on the boat.
It works at the other end of the charter, too. Returning to a town rather than immediately treating the harbour as an airport departure lounge makes the last evening feel like part of the trip.
North or south: choose the holiday you want
Preveza gives you a useful starting point for discussing two different Ionian holidays. To the south, Lefkada, Meganisi and the smaller islands invite a trip built around village evenings and time in bays. To the north, Paxos and Antipaxos offer a different direction and a different passage plan.

If you are considering a longer escape, read one week or two weeks in the Ionian. Extra time can mean more islands, but it can also mean enjoying the same area without moving every day. Final passages and stops depend on the forecast, local conditions and your skipper’s plan.
